As the title suggests, this is the third blog I've tried to keep over the last six or seven years without a whole lot of success. Most of these posts will undoubtedly occur while I am at work, not so much working as figuring out how to occupy my day (the compulsive facebook usage and the break down into creating a myspace have not effectively used up my free time).
Some interesting things I found today:
I've had a pretty long standing interest in education and this kind of thing makes me rather nervous. I understand (or would like to think I understand) that discipline in schools has changed dramatically even in the few years that I have left elementary and middle school. I remember a sixth or seventh grade wide discussion in our little auditorium concerning an epidemic of "purple nurples" and "inappropriate touching". While I'll agree that nipples are a hands-off area for most, part of me feels that these restrictions on all sorts of physical contact distort the idea of a natural part of human interaction. The whole slippery slope from a high five in the classroom to brass knuckles boxing in the hallways I think is rather severe. It's also another factor that already stressed out teachers have to deal with and a potential for favoritism. Maybe Mr. Jones lets Susie and Jamie exchange high fives, since they pay attention and don't disrupt the classroom, but maybe chastises Maria and Becky for the same action five minutes later because they tend to talk a lot.
I guess it just seems too much for me, but I'm not a teacher and maybe this is a potential winning strategy in education today...
